The Guinness brand is currently owned by Diageo plc, a British-based multinational beverage company.[5] Diageo was formed in 1997 by the merger of Guinness plc and Grand Metropolitan.[4] The company is listed on both the London and New York Stock Exchanges, and controls the brand, global marketing, and strategic direction of Guinness worldwide.[1]
In 2025, Diageo sold its 80.4% shareholding in Guinness Ghana Breweries plc to Castel Group; however, Diageo retains ownership of the Guinness brand itself. Diageo and Castel have entered into new long-term license and royalty agreements for Guinness production in Ghana, meaning Guinness continues to be brewed and sold there under license from Diageo.[1][2][7]
Similar arrangements exist in other markets such as Nigeria, where Diageo has sold its brewery shareholdings but retains the rights and control over the Guinness brand, using local partners to produce and sell it under licensing agreements.[6]
