Who Owns Disney?

Disney has no owner. The Walt Disney Company is listed on the New York Stock Exchange with no controlling shareholder, no dual-class structure and no parent above it. The Disney family has not controlled it for decades. The UK register does name it: Companies House records The Walt Disney Company of Delaware as the ultimate controller of its British business, an entry made on 2 May 2025. Ownership verified 6 September 2026.

Who owns Disney?

The Walt Disney Company is a public company. Ownership sits with its shareholders, changes daily, and no single holder is anywhere near control.

Disney has a single class of common stock. Votes track shares exactly — there is no founder class, no super-voting stock and no family block, which is what separates it from Comcast, Meta or Spotify elsewhere on this site. Anyone who owns Disney shares owns a proportionate say.

The UK arm is THE WALT DISNEY COMPANY LIMITED (00530051), incorporated 8 March 1954 and registered in Hammersmith, London — Disney has had a British company for over seventy years.

Parent company and ownership structure

The chain recorded at Companies House is short and finishes at the parent:

  1. The Walt Disney Company Limited (00530051)
  2. Wedco Emea Ventures Limited (09104101) — 75%+, since 6 April 2016
  3. The Walt Disney Company — Delaware, United States, number 2528877, notified 2 May 2025

That last entry replaced Wedco Global Ventures LLP, which ceased the same day — a group reorganisation that had the useful side effect of putting the American parent’s name and Delaware registration number directly onto the UK register.

Above The Walt Disney Company there is nothing. It is the ultimate parent, and its own ownership is held by the market.

Major shareholders or controlling interests

The largest holders are the index managers — Vanguard, BlackRock and State Street — each with a mid-to-high single-digit percentage held inside funds on behalf of those funds’ investors, not on their own account.

Individual holdings are small. The Disney family holds a minor stake and no special rights; Roy E. Disney’s campaigns in the 2000s were waged as an activist shareholder, not as an owner. Laurene Powell Jobs became one of the largest individual holders when Disney bought Pixar in 2006 and Steve Jobs’ stake converted into Disney stock, and that holding has since been reduced.

No holder approaches the 25% that would register as significant control under UK rules, and none can appoint the board alone.

Other media assets in the group

Disney owns Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm and the former 21st Century Fox entertainment assets, along with ABC, ESPN, National Geographic, Disney+, Hulu and the theme parks and cruise line.

Two boundaries are worth marking. Fox News and the Fox broadcast network were not part of the 2019 purchase — they stayed with the Murdoch family in Fox Corporation, so Disney owns the Fox film studio and not Fox News. And Disney lost the auction for Sky to Comcast in 2018, which is why Sky sits under Comcast rather than Disney today.

Ownership history

Founded by Walt and Roy Disney in 1923 and public since 1957, Disney has never been acquired and has had no change of control in its history. The family’s stake was diluted across generations of share issuance rather than sold in any single event.

Its ownership story is one of buying rather than being bought: Capital Cities/ABC in 1996, Pixar in 2006, Marvel in 2009, Lucasfilm in 2012, and most of 21st Century Fox in 2019 for a reported $71bn — the deal that also brought the Fox stake in Sky, later sold to Comcast, and control of Hulu.

The most contested episode was a takeover attempt in the 1980s that Disney fought off, followed by the arrival of Michael Eisner. That is the closest the company has come to changing hands.

The UK company’s own record carries a small curiosity: on 5 October 2022 it appears under the name The Walt Disney Company Limited Limited, for a single day, before settling on its current name. Duplicated words like that are filing artefacts, and they are surprisingly common on the register.

The UK chain — company 00530051, Wedco Emea Ventures and The Walt Disney Company’s Delaware number — is from the Companies House register, including the 2 May 2025 change and the one-day 2022 name.

Disney’s own shareholders are not. Institutional and individual holdings are disclosed through US securities filings — the annual proxy statement and Schedule 13G filings for institutions crossing 5% — and every percentage is a snapshot from a filing date. The $71bn Fox price is a reported figure. Companies House does not verify most filed information.
