How to find out who is behind a website or domain — using RDAP and registry records, and the company and trade mark sources that work when registration details are withheld.

How domain ownership lookup works

Every domain has a registration record held by its registry. That record is queryable, but since GDPR the personal details of individual registrants are redacted by default, so what you get is usually the registrar, the dates and the name servers.

Use RDAP and registry tools

RDAP has replaced WHOIS as the standard, returning structured data with proper access controls. Nominet’s lookup is the authoritative source for .uk; other registries run their own.

Why registrant details may be hidden

Two mechanisms, often confused. Data-protection redaction removes personal data from public output automatically — Nominet lets individuals not trading from a domain opt out of publication. Privacy and proxy services go further, substituting a provider’s details for the registrant’s. In both cases the data still exists and is disclosable through proper channels.

Domain registrant vs website operator

These are not the same. A domain may be registered to an agency, a developer or a holding entity while the site is run by someone else entirely. A UK business trading online must disclose its identity on the site itself, which is frequently a faster answer than the registration record.

Privacy and data limitations

Registration records go stale, and a hidden registrant is usually a private individual exercising a legitimate right. We do not publish personal registrant details; where we identify who is behind a site, it is from the site’s own disclosures, company filings and trade mark records.
