Sports Ownership

Who owns sports teams, leagues, promotions and venues beyond football — the investment groups, families and corporate structures behind them.

Who owns sports teams and organisations?

Ownership outside football is more varied. Some organisations are conventional companies with shareholders; others are member-owned, run by governing bodies, or held by promoters who own the competition itself rather than any team in it.

Ownership and control structures

Control does not always follow shareholding. A governing body may sanction competition, a promoter may own the events, and a venue may be owned by someone unconnected to either. Profiles name which entity holds what.

Investors and parent groups

Private equity and sovereign investment have moved into rights, leagues and promotions as much as into teams. Where a stake sits in a league or a rights vehicle rather than a club, profiles say so — that is frequently the more consequential ownership.
