Who Owns Bugatti?
Bugatti is owned by Bugatti Rimac, a Croatian joint venture between Rimac Group (55%) and Porsche (45%) — and that is changing. In April 2026 Porsche agreed to sell its entire 45% to a consortium led by HOF Capital, with BlueFive Capital its largest investor. The sale is signed but not yet completed, pending regulatory clearance. Nothing about Bugatti’s ownership appears on the UK register. Ownership verified 6 September 2026.
Who owns the Bugatti brand?
Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S. is French, based at Molsheim in Alsace where Ettore Bugatti built the original cars. Since November 2021 it has sat inside Bugatti Rimac d.o.o., a Croatian company formed to combine Bugatti with the electric hypercar maker Rimac.
The split at formation was Rimac Group 55%, Porsche AG 45% — so Bugatti has been majority-controlled from Croatia, not Germany, for nearly five years, which surprises most people who assume Volkswagen still owns it.
Searching Companies House for Bugatti is actively misleading. BUGATTI CARS LIMITED (02940344) is a live English company controlled by two private individuals, Richard and Oliver Crosthwaite, with no connection to the manufacturer. The Bugatti Owners’ Club Limited (00246747) has existed since 1930 and is an enthusiasts’ organisation. Neither is the car company, and matching on a name alone would put you badly wrong here.
Parent company and ultimate owner
Working upwards from the cars, as the structure stands today:
- Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S. — Molsheim, France
- Bugatti Rimac d.o.o. — Croatia; Rimac Group 55%, Porsche AG 45%
- Porsche AG — listed in Frankfurt, majority-owned by Volkswagen AG
- Porsche Automobil Holding SE — holds the voting majority of Volkswagen, and is controlled by the Porsche and Piëch families
That is why Bugatti has been described as family-controlled at four removes. The chain runs from a French factory through a Croatian joint venture and two separate German listed companies before reaching the families at the top — and only for the 45% side of it.
Brand owner vs operating company
The Bugatti marque, the trade marks and the Molsheim operation belong to the group; the joint venture holds the business. Rimac contributes the electric powertrain engineering and takes operational control of both brands, with Bugatti and Rimac cars developed under one roof while remaining distinct marques.
Rimac Group is itself a separate company from Bugatti Rimac. Porsche held 20.6% of Rimac Group as well as 45% of the joint venture, which is why its exit involves two stakes rather than one.
When the ownership changed
Bugatti has changed hands more often than almost any brand on this site:
- Founded at Molsheim in 1909; car production effectively ended in the 1950s.
- Revived in Italy in 1987 as Bugatti Automobili S.p.A. by Romano Artioli, which built the EB110 and collapsed in 1995.
- Volkswagen acquired the marque in 1998 — the same year VW bought Bentley and BMW took the Rolls-Royce name, as this site’s Rolls-Royce profile sets out. Production returned to Molsheim with the Veyron in 2005.
- November 2021: VW moved Bugatti into Bugatti Rimac, with Rimac taking 55%.
- 24 April 2026: Porsche agreed to sell its 45% of Bugatti Rimac and its 20.6% of Rimac Group to a consortium led by HOF Capital, with BlueFive Capital the largest investor.
That last step has been signed but not completed. Both companies say completion is subject to regulatory clearances and expected before the end of 2026. Until it closes, Porsche remains the 45% holder — so an answer given today and an answer given in January may differ, and both will have been correct when written.
Related brands in the same group
Through Volkswagen, Bugatti’s current co-owner also sits alongside Audi, Porsche, Lamborghini, Bentley, Škoda and SEAT. Through Rimac, it sits alongside Rimac’s own hypercars and Rimac Technology, its components business, which supplies other manufacturers.
When the HOF Capital sale completes, the Volkswagen connection — 26 years of it — ends, and Bugatti’s stablemate becomes Rimac alone.
Sources and verification
This is one of the few profiles on this site with no UK register evidence at all. Bugatti’s owners are French, Croatian and German companies, none of them filing at Companies House, and the English companies carrying the Bugatti name are unrelated businesses.
The 55/45 split, the April 2026 agreement and its pending status come from Porsche’s and Rimac’s own announcements. Those are the parties to the transaction, which makes them authoritative on the facts but leaves the ownership reported rather than register-verified — and subject to change the moment the deal closes.
