Who Owns BMW?

BMW owns itself. Bayerische Motoren Werke AG is listed in Frankfurt, and its largest shareholders are the Quandt family — Stefan Quandt and Susanne Klatten — who together hold a reported stake of around 45%, enough to control it without owning it outright. Who owns the BMW brand?

BMW AG is a German public company, listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, with no parent above it. It is not owned by Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz or any other group, despite recurring confusion between the German carmakers.

The UK holding company is BMW (UK) HOLDINGS LIMITED (01213133), registered in Farnborough. Its person with significant control is Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (Germany, HRB 42243, Munich), holding 75% or more of shares and voting rights.

Parent company and ultimate owner

Above BMW AG there is no owner, but there is a controlling family. Stefan Quandt and his sister Susanne Klatten, children of Herbert Quandt, hold large stakes reported at roughly 29% and 19% respectively — around 45% between them.

That is short of a majority and comfortably enough for control in practice: no other holder comes close, and the remainder is dispersed among institutions and private investors. It is the same pattern as several family-influenced listed companies on this site — control through a large minority rather than outright ownership.

Herbert Quandt’s decision to back BMW in 1959, when it was close to being sold to Daimler-Benz, is the reason the company exists independently at all.

Brand owner vs operating company

BMW AG owns the brand and builds the cars. The UK companies import, sell and finance them, and manufacture here — Mini at Oxford, engines at Hams Hall, and Rolls-Royce cars at Goodwood.

When the ownership changed

BMW itself has not changed hands. Its UK holding company has — repeatedly and dramatically — and its previous names are among the most striking entries on the whole register:

Company 01213133 was incorporated in 1975, the year the British government took British Leyland into public ownership. The company that held the wreck of the British motor industry — Austin, Morris, Triumph, Rover, Jaguar and the rest — became BL, then Rover Group, and after BMW bought Rover in 1994 it was renamed BMW (UK) Holdings Limited.

BMW’s ownership of Rover ended badly. It sold the business in 2000, keeping Mini and selling Land Rover to Ford; the rest became MG Rover and collapsed in 2005. But BMW kept the company, and so the vehicle through which BMW owns its British operations today is, on the register, the same legal person as British Leyland.

BMW owns the BMW marque, Mini, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars and BMW Motorrad.

It does not own Rolls-Royce Holdings plc, the separately listed aero engine company — a distinction covered in full on this site’s Rolls-Royce page. It has not owned Land Rover since 2000 or Rover since 2000; Land Rover and Jaguar belong to Tata Motors. And it has no connection to Mercedes-Benz Group or Volkswagen, both independent competitors.
