Who Owns Lamborghini?
Lamborghini is owned by Volkswagen, through Audi. Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A. is an Italian company held by AUDI AG, which is itself part of the Volkswagen Group — so Lamborghini sits under the same structure that controls Porsche and Škoda, and ultimately under the Porsche and Piëch families. There is no Lamborghini company on the UK register: every result is an owners’ club or an unrelated business. Ownership verified 6 September 2026.
Who owns the Lamborghini brand?
Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A. is based at Sant’Agata Bolognese in Italy and is wholly owned within the Volkswagen Group, held through AUDI AG. It is not listed and has no minority shareholder.
Searching Companies House for Lamborghini returns nothing belonging to the manufacturer. The active companies are the Lamborghini Club UK Limited (02105750, incorporated 4 March 1987) and the Lamborghini Owners Club UK Ltd (12376776) — enthusiasts’ organisations — alongside a series of dissolved ventures using the name.
An owners’ club is a members’ body, not a subsidiary. As with Škoda elsewhere on this site, the absence of a UK company is itself the finding: the brand is distributed here through Volkswagen Group United Kingdom Limited rather than through a company of its own.
Parent company and ultimate owner
The chain runs from Italy to Germany and ends with a family:
- Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A. — Italy
- AUDI AG — Germany, wholly owned within the Volkswagen Group
- Volkswagen AG — listed in Frankfurt
- Porsche Automobil Holding SE — around 53% of Volkswagen’s voting shares
- The Porsche and Piëch families, who control Porsche SE
The German state of Lower Saxony also holds around 20% of Volkswagen’s votes with statutory blocking rights, so the same unusual public interest that sits over Škoda sits over Lamborghini.
Volkswagen has periodically been reported as considering a flotation or sale of Lamborghini, and has repeatedly said it is not for sale. Nothing has changed hands.
Brand owner vs operating company
Automobili Lamborghini owns the marque, the trade marks and the Sant’Agata factory, and builds the cars there. Audi provides engineering and group functions; Lamborghini’s V10 and V8 engineering has drawn on Audi’s for years, which is the practical consequence of the ownership.
UK dealerships are franchises owned by independent motor retail groups. The badge above a showroom is a licence to sell, not evidence of who owns the business — the same distinction drawn on this site’s Wingstop and Škoda pages.
When the ownership changed
Lamborghini has changed hands more often than almost any carmaker, and spent decades in trouble:
- 1963 — founded by Ferruccio Lamborghini, a tractor manufacturer, reputedly after a dispute with Enzo Ferrari.
- 1970s — financial collapse; Ferruccio sold out and the company entered receivership in 1978.
- 1980 — bought by the Mimran brothers, who revived it.
- 1987 — sold to Chrysler.
- 1994 — sold on to MegaTech, an Indonesian-controlled group associated with the Suharto family.
- 1998 — bought by Audi, and so by Volkswagen.
That 1998 purchase belongs to the same extraordinary year covered on this site’s Rolls-Royce and Bugatti pages: Volkswagen also bought Bentley and the Bugatti marque, and BMW took the Rolls-Royce name. Four historic marques changed owners within months.
Audi’s ownership has now lasted longer than every previous owner combined, and has taken Lamborghini from a company that repeatedly ran out of money to a consistently profitable one.
Related brands in the same group
Volkswagen Group owns Lamborghini, Audi, Porsche, Bentley, Bugatti’s former stablemates, Škoda, SEAT and Cupra, Ducati, and the Volkswagen marque, plus Scania and MAN.
Ducati is the closest relative: it is also held through Audi, so the motorcycle maker and Lamborghini share an immediate parent.
Lamborghini is not connected to Ferrari, which is a separately listed company controlled by the Agnelli family’s Exor, nor to Lamborghini Trattori — the tractor business Ferruccio founded, which was sold separately and belongs to a different owner entirely. Two companies carry the Lamborghini name and only one of them makes the cars.
