Who Owns Volvo Cars?

Volvo Cars is Chinese-owned; Volvo trucks are Swedish-owned. They are separate companies with separate owners, and the UK register proves it outright: Companies House names Mr Li Shufu, the Chinese founder of Geely, as controller of Volvo Car UK Limited — and AB Volvo of Sweden as controller of Volvo Group UK Limited. Who owns the Volvo Cars brand?

The car business is VOLVO CAR UK LIMITED (02281044), incorporated 27 July 1988. Its person with significant control is Mr Li Shufu — a Chinese national resident in China — holding 75% or more of shares and voting rights with the right to appoint or remove directors, notified 6 April 2016.

It is unusual for an individual to be named directly as controlling a carmaker’s national subsidiary. Most groups interpose a holding company; here the register goes straight to the person.

Above it sits Volvo Car AB in Gothenburg, listed in Stockholm since 2021, with Geely holding a large majority — reported at around 78% — and Li Shufu controlling Geely.

Parent company and ultimate owner

The chain runs from Britain to Sweden to China: Volvo Car UK, then Volvo Car AB, then Geely Holding, then Li Shufu.

Volvo Car AB’s 2021 flotation sold a minority to the public and left Geely firmly in control, so the listing changed who could invest without changing who decides. That is the same distinction drawn on this site’s Porsche and Alphabet pages: a listing is not the same as dispersed control.

Brand owner vs operating company

This is where the confusion lives, and it is a genuine one rather than a careless mistake.

AB Volvo — the Swedish company that makes Volvo trucks, buses and construction equipment — and Volvo Car AB are separate businesses. They were one company until 1999, and they still share the Volvo name and the iron mark through a jointly owned trade mark holding company.

The UK register shows the split cleanly. VOLVO GROUP UK LIMITED (02190944), incorporated 10 November 1987 and previously named Volvo Truck and Bus Limited, records its controller as AB Volvo (Sweden, 556012-5790). Its sister company on the car side records Li Shufu.

So a Volvo lorry and a Volvo estate car sold in the same town have no owner in common. Neither company owns the other, and neither is a subsidiary of the other.

When the ownership changed

Volvo Cars has had three owners in twenty-five years:

• 1999 — AB Volvo sold the car business to Ford for a reported $6.45bn, splitting the two Volvos for the first time.
• 2010 — Ford sold it to Geely for a reported $1.8bn, during the retrenchment that also saw Ford sell Land Rover and Jaguar to Tata, as this site’s Land Rover page records.
• 2021 — Volvo Car AB floated in Stockholm, with Geely retaining majority control.

Geely’s ownership has been the longest and, by most measures, the most successful: Volvo Cars was loss-making under Ford and has been profitable and substantially larger since.

The UK register has not needed to change through any of this since 2016, because Li Shufu’s holding has stayed above the 75% band throughout.

Geely owns Volvo Cars, Polestar, Lotus, Geely Auto, Lynk & Co, Zeekr and the London EV Company — which builds the black cab — and holds a substantial stake in Mercedes-Benz Group.

AB Volvo owns Volvo Trucks, Renault Trucks, Mack and Volvo Buses.

Two errors worth avoiding. Polestar began as Volvo Cars’ performance arm and is now a separate listed company, sharing Geely as an owner rather than being a Volvo subsidiary. And the black cab and Lotus are Geely stablemates of Volvo Cars, not of Volvo trucks.

Sources and verification

Both UK company numbers, both incorporation dates, both PSC entries — Li Shufu on the car company and AB Volvo on the truck company — and the Volvo Truck and Bus previous name are from the Companies House register and can be checked directly. Volvo Group UK also filed a “not completed reasonable steps” statement on 18 April 2017 and withdrew it on 22 February 2018.

Geely’s reported 78% of Volvo Car AB and the trade mark sharing arrangement are not on the UK register: Volvo Car AB reports to the Stockholm market and Geely Holding is a private Chinese group. The 1999, 2010 and 2021 transaction values are reported figures. Companies House does not verify most filed information.
