Who Owns Omoda Cars?

Omoda is owned by Chery, the carmaker from Wuhu in Anhui province — the same owner as its sister marque Jaecoo, and the two share a single UK company. Chery is neither wholly state-owned nor private: after its 2025 flotation the Anhui and Wuhu governments hold a reported 36%, with employees and private investors holding the rest. Who owns the Omoda Cars brand?

Omoda is a marque created by Chery Automobile in 2022 for markets outside China, positioned around crossovers and urban models. It has never been an independent company.

In Britain it is handled by OMODA & JAECOO UK LIMITED (15203898), incorporated 11 October 2023 — a single company covering both marques rather than one each.

That company has filed an active statement since incorporation that it knows of no registrable person or registrable relevant legal entity. So Companies House holds no ownership information for Omoda at all.

Parent company and ultimate owner

Chery Automobile Co. Ltd owns the brand, and its own ownership was restructured recently.

Until 2025 Chery Automobile sat under Chery Holding Group and the Wuhu municipal government. Its 2025 listing separated it from Chery Holding and left a mixed register: the Anhui and Wuhu governments at a reported 36%, employees at around 18%, Luxshare — the electronics manufacturer known for assembling consumer devices — at around 17%, and the battery makers CATL and Gotion with smaller holdings.

The presence of Luxshare and CATL on the register is worth noting in itself: Omoda’s ultimate owners include the company’s own battery supplier and a major electronics contract manufacturer, which is a supply-chain relationship and an ownership relationship at once.

The state is the largest shareholder and does not hold a majority. Describing Omoda as “Chinese state-owned” overstates it; describing it as a private company understates it.

Brand owner vs operating company

Chery builds the cars in China and elsewhere; the UK company imports and supports them; the dealerships are independent motor retail businesses holding franchises.

Omoda’s position in the group is worth understanding for anyone buying one. It is an export-only marque — created for foreign markets rather than adapted from a Chinese range — so the brand’s identity, warranty and dealer network in Britain are newer than the engineering behind them. Chery has been building cars since 1997 and exporting at scale for years; the Omoda name dates from 2022.

When the ownership changed

Omoda has not changed hands. It was created in 2022 and arrived in Britain in 2024, alongside Jaecoo.

The ownership change happened a level up, in the 2025 flotation that turned Chery Automobile from a municipally controlled subsidiary into a listed company with a dispersed shareholder base. That diluted state control without eliminating state influence.

The two marques together passed a reported one million cumulative global sales by April 2026, under four years from Omoda’s launch — one of the fastest expansions of any new car brand into Europe.

Related brands in the same group

Chery owns Omoda, Jaecoo, Exeed, iCar and the Chery marque. Omoda and Jaecoo are the two sold in Britain and share the same UK company, the same importer and the same ultimate owner; they differ in styling and positioning rather than in ownership.

Chery is unconnected to BYD, Geely and SAIC — respectively separately listed, the owner of Volvo Cars and Lotus, and the owner of MG. Each is covered separately on this site. They are competitors, not stablemates, and the habit of treating Chinese carmakers as one entity is the commonest error made about all of them.
