Who Owns Jaguar?

who owns the brand

Jaguar is owned by India’s Tata group, through Jaguar Land Rover, which Tata bought from Ford in 2008. But the Companies House position changed in 2025 and is now unhelpful: Tata Sons Limited ceased as the registered controller of Jaguar Land Rover Automotive plc on 22 October 2025, replaced by a “no registrable person” statement. The register today establishes nothing about who owns Jaguar. Ownership verified 6 September 2026.

Who owns the Jaguar brand?

The marque belongs to Jaguar Land Rover, part of the Tata group. The British chain on the register runs:

  1. JAGUAR CARS LIMITED (01672067), incorporated 15 October 1982, at Abbey Road, Whitley, Coventry
  2. controlled at 75% or more by Jaguar Land Rover Limited
  3. within JAGUAR LAND ROVER AUTOMOTIVE PLC (06477691), the group holding company

Above that, the register now stops dead. JLR Automotive plc filed a statement on 22 October 2025 that it knows of no registrable person or relevant legal entity, and that statement is active.

Searching for “Jaguar” is otherwise unproductive: over 590 companies use the name, including a chemical distributor and a string of dissolved one-person businesses.

Parent company and ultimate owner

The ultimate owner is the Tata group of Mumbai. JLR sits beneath Tata Motors, which is listed in India, and above that Tata Sons, the group holding company — which is itself majority-owned by Tata trusts, philanthropic bodies, rather than by a family or by public investors.

That is an ownership structure with no close British parallel. The ultimate beneficiaries of the group that owns Jaguar are charitable trusts, and the profits flow substantially to philanthropy rather than to shareholders.

The change on the UK register in October 2025 has a clear external cause. Tata Motors demerged on 1 October 2025, splitting into a passenger vehicle company holding JLR and a separate commercial vehicle company. Tata Sons ceased as JLR’s registered controller three weeks later. The restructuring, not a sale, is what removed the entry — but the effect on anyone consulting Companies House today is the same: no owner is named.

Brand owner vs operating company

Jaguar Cars Limited holds the marque; Jaguar Land Rover Limited builds and sells the cars. Neither is independent.

The register preserves a name swap that trips people up. Company 01672067 — now Jaguar Cars Limited — was previously named Jaguar Land Rover Automotive Limited, and before that Jaguar Cars Overseas Holdings Limited. The group name was used by this company, released, and later taken by the separate plc, 06477691.

So a document referring to “Jaguar Land Rover Automotive” may point to either company depending on its date. As everywhere on this site, only company numbers are reliable; names move between entities.

When the ownership changed

Jaguar was founded in Blackpool in 1922 as the Swallow Sidecar Company and became independent, British-owned and Coventry-based for most of the twentieth century.

  • 1966 — merges with the British Motor Corporation, later absorbed into British Leyland and nationalised in 1975.
  • 1984 — privatised and floated on the London Stock Exchange.
  • 1989 — bought by Ford, which later added Land Rover in 2000 and ran both inside its Premier Automotive Group.
  • 2008 — Ford sells Jaguar and Land Rover together to Tata Motors for a reported $2.3bn.
  • 1 October 2025 — the Tata Motors demerger; 22 October 2025, Tata Sons ceases on the UK register.

The 2008 sale is the one worth understanding properly. Ford sold at the bottom of its own financial crisis, and JLR went on to become substantially more valuable under Tata than it had been under Ford — one of the few cases where a British marque sold abroad clearly prospered afterwards.

Jaguar has since stopped selling most of its range while it repositions as an electric luxury brand, a transition announced with a rebrand in late 2024 that attracted considerable criticism. That is a strategy change under the same owner, not an ownership change.

Related brands in the same group

Land Rover and Range Rover are in the same company, and Range Rover has been elevated to a marque in its own right within JLR — the same shape as Genesis within Hyundai or Cupra within SEAT, covered elsewhere on this site.

The wider Tata group owns Tetley tea, Tata Steel — including the former British Steel works at Port Talbot — and Tata Consultancy Services. Tata is one of the largest foreign employers in Britain, and Jaguar is only part of that.

Jaguar has no connection to Aston Martin, Bentley or Rolls-Royce, all separately owned. Ford, its owner for nineteen years, retains no interest.

Sources and verification

The company numbers, the 1982 incorporation, the previous names of 01672067, the Jaguar Land Rover Limited PSC entry, the Tata Sons entry and its 22 October 2025 cessation are all Companies House records, checkable by number.

Two limits. The register no longer names an owner for the JLR group: an active “no registrable person” statement is a statement about the company’s knowledge, not evidence that no owner exists. Tata’s ownership is established instead by Tata Motors’ Indian market disclosures and the group’s own announcements.

And Tata Sons’ own ownership — the trusts, and the long-running Shapoorji Pallonji minority stake — sits entirely outside UK records, under Indian company law. Companies House does not verify most filed information.
