Who Owns Ferrari?
Ferrari is controlled by the Agnelli family and the Ferrari family together. Ferrari N.V. is listed in New York and Milan, but a loyalty voting scheme lifts long-term holders’ votes above their shareholdings: Exor, the Agnelli holding company, turns 21.33% of the shares into 32.32% of the votes, and Trust Piero Ferrari turns 10.67% into 16.17%. They vote together under a shareholders’ agreement — a combined 48.5% of votes on 32% of the company. Ownership verified 6 September 2026.
Who owns the Ferrari brand?
Ferrari N.V. is a Dutch-incorporated company listed on the New York Stock Exchange and Euronext Milan. It owns the road car business, the Scuderia Ferrari Formula One team and the brand.
Most of the shares are held by ordinary public investors. Control, however, is not spread the way the shareholding is.
Parent company and ultimate owner
Two holders sit above the rest, and both hold more votes than shares:
- Exor N.V. — the Agnelli family’s holding company. 21.33% of shares, 32.32% of votes as of 4 February 2026.
- Trust Piero Ferrari — established by Enzo Ferrari’s son. 10.67% of shares, 16.17% of votes.
The mechanism is Ferrari’s loyalty voting programme: shareholders who hold for a qualifying period receive special voting shares granting extra votes. Exor holds around 37.8 million such shares and Trust Piero Ferrari around 18.9 million. It is designed to reward long-term holders — and in practice it entrenches the two founding-family interests.
They also vote together. Exor, Piero Ferrari and his trust are parties to a shareholders’ agreement, most recently amended on 3 January 2026. Combined, that is roughly 48.5% of the votes on about 32% of the economics — not a formal majority, but decisive in practice against a dispersed public register.
Brand owner vs operating company
Ferrari N.V. owns the brand and the business. Beneath it, Ferrari S.p.A. in Maranello builds the cars.
The Formula One team is part of the same company rather than a separate business — unlike several rivals, where the team and the road car maker have different owners. Aston Martin is the contrasting case on this site: its F1 team sits with Lawrence Stroll’s interests, not with the listed car company.
Ferrari also licenses its brand extensively for merchandise, theme parks and apparel. Those are licensees, not owners, and a Ferrari-branded product is generally not made by Ferrari.
When the ownership changed
Enzo Ferrari founded the company in 1939, building cars from 1947. Fiat acquired 50% in 1969 and increased its stake after Enzo’s death in 1988, with Piero Ferrari retaining 10% — the holding that survives today through his trust.
The decisive modern change came in 2015–16, when Ferrari was separated from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and listed independently. The spin-off distributed shares to FCA holders, which is how Exor — already the Agnelli vehicle above FCA — became Ferrari’s largest shareholder directly.
Piero Ferrari’s stake has been continuous since his father’s death and is the reason a Ferrari still sits on the register nearly forty years later.
Related brands in the same group
Exor’s holdings include Stellantis — formed from Fiat Chrysler and PSA, and owner of Fiat, Peugeot, Vauxhall, Jeep and others — CNH Industrial, Juventus, Philips and The Economist.
Those are Exor’s, not Ferrari’s. A shared major shareholder does not make Ferrari part of Stellantis, and Ferrari’s separation from Fiat Chrysler in 2016 was precisely the point of the exercise.
Sources and verification
Ferrari N.V. is Dutch-incorporated and US-listed, so no UK register records its ownership. The figures above come from Ferrari’s own shareholder disclosures and SEC filings, dated 4 February 2026, and from the shareholders’ agreement as amended on 3 January 2026.
Because votes and shares diverge here by design, both are given throughout — quoting only the shareholding would understate control, and quoting only the votes would overstate the economics. Loyalty voting entitlements change as holders qualify or sell, so these are snapshots.
