Who Owns Jaguar Land Rover?

who owns the brand

Jaguar Land Rover is owned by the Tata group of India, which bought it from Ford in 2008. But the UK register no longer evidences that: Tata Sons ceased to be JLR’s registered controller on 22 October 2025, and Jaguar Land Rover Automotive plc now files a statement that it has no registrable person with significant control. The Tata ownership is real — it is simply not currently provable from Companies House. Ownership verified 5 September 2026.

Who owns the Jaguar Land Rover brand?

Two UK companies matter. Jaguar Land Rover Limited (01672070) is the operating company, incorporated 15 October 1982 and formerly named Jaguar Cars Limited. Above it sits Jaguar Land Rover Automotive plc (06477691), incorporated in 2008 to hold the business after the Ford sale.

Jaguar and Land Rover are two marques inside one company. They were separate businesses historically and have been a single entity since 2008, which is why “who owns Jaguar” and “who owns Land Rover” have the same answer.

Parent company and ultimate owner

The ultimate owner is the Tata group, through Tata Motors. The structure changed materially in 2025: Tata Motors demerged, effective 1 October 2025, separating its commercial vehicle business from its passenger vehicle business, with JLR remaining on the passenger vehicle side — now trading as Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles.

Above Tata Motors sits Tata Sons, and above that the Tata Trusts, the Indian philanthropic bodies that hold the majority of Tata Sons. That is an unusual apex: the ultimate control of Jaguar and Land Rover rests with charitable trusts rather than with shareholders or a family.

Brand owner vs operating company

The distinction to hold onto is between the operating company, the immediate parent and the group at the top. Jaguar Land Rover Limited builds the cars. Jaguar Land Rover Automotive plc holds it. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles holds that, and the Tata group sits above.

The marques themselves also have deep histories with other owners — Land Rover under British Leyland, Rover and BMW; Jaguar independent, then under British Leyland, then Ford — and trade mark registrations from those eras can still surface in searches. Present ownership is what the current corporate chain says, not what an old registration implies.

When the ownership changed

Ford bought Jaguar in 1989 and Land Rover in 2000, then sold both to Tata Motors in 2008 for around $2.3 billion, combining them into Jaguar Land Rover.

The 2025 change is more subtle and more recent. On 22 October 2025 Tata Sons Limited (registered in India, FC015381) ceased as the person with significant control of Jaguar Land Rover Automotive plc, having held that position since 6 April 2016. On the same date the company filed a statement that it knows of no registrable person or relevant legal entity.

Related brands in the same group

The Tata group is large and varied: Tata Motors, Tata Steel — which owns steelmaking operations in the UK — Tata Consultancy Services, and Tetley among many others. Common Tata ownership does not mean the businesses are run together, and Tata Steel UK and Jaguar Land Rover are separate operations that happen to share a group.

Sources and verification

The company details and the ceased PSC entry come from the Companies House register for companies 01672070 and 06477691.

This page is explicit about a limit rather than glossing it. Companies House currently shows no registrable PSC for Jaguar Land Rover Automotive plc. A “no registrable person” statement is a legitimate filing — it commonly arises when the parent is not itself subject to equivalent UK disclosure — but its practical effect is that the UK register does not presently evidence who controls JLR. The Tata ownership above is established from the group’s own disclosures and the demerger record, not from a UK filing, and anyone wanting register-grade proof has to go to Indian filings instead.
