Who Owns Kia?

Kia is controlled by Hyundai, but is not a Hyundai subsidiary in the ordinary sense. Hyundai Motor Company holds roughly a third of Kia, and the two sit inside the same Korean group through a circular cross-shareholding structure rather than a straightforward parent-subsidiary chain. Companies House establishes nothing: Kia UK Limited has filed a “no registrable person” statement since 12 April 2017. Ownership verified 6 September 2026.

Who owns the Kia brand?

Kia Corporation of Seoul owns the marque. It is listed on the Korea Exchange in its own right — Kia has its own shareholders, its own share price and its own board.

The British company is KIA UK LIMITED (04415807), incorporated 12 April 2002 and registered in Walton-on-Thames. Its previous name is Kia Motors (UK) Limited, reflecting the group’s 2021 rebrand from Kia Motors to simply Kia.

Its PSC register shows no controller at all — only an active statement, filed 12 April 2017, that the company knows of no registrable person or relevant legal entity. So the UK register establishes nothing about who owns Kia, and the answer must come from Korea.

Parent company and ultimate owner

Hyundai Motor Company is Kia’s largest shareholder, holding roughly a third. That is control in practice and short of ownership in form: Kia is not a wholly owned subsidiary, and it remains separately listed.

Above both sits the Hyundai Motor Group, a Korean chaebol held together by a loop of cross-shareholdings. Hyundai Motor holds a large stake in Kia; Kia holds a stake in Hyundai Mobis, the parts company; and Mobis holds a stake back in Hyundai Motor. The circle closes.

The effect is that the founding Chung family — Chung Euisun, the founder’s grandson, is executive chair — directs companies far larger than their direct holdings would suggest, without any special share class. Successive Korean governments have pressed the chaebol to unwind these structures. Hyundai has announced restructuring plans more than once without completing them.

Brand owner vs operating company

Kia Corporation owns the marque and designs and builds the cars; Kia UK Limited imports and distributes them here, selling through franchised dealers who own their own businesses.

Kia and Hyundai share platforms, engines and engineering while marketing separately and competing directly for the same buyers. A Kia and a Hyundai of comparable size are frequently the same car underneath with different bodywork and different showrooms.

That is a deliberate arrangement rather than an accident of common ownership, and it explains the seven-year warranty: a manufacturer able to spread development costs across two brands can afford a longer guarantee than a smaller independent could.

When the ownership changed

Kia was founded in 1944, making steel tubing and bicycle parts before moving to motorcycles and then cars — it is older than Hyundai’s car business.

• 1997 — Kia goes bankrupt in the Asian financial crisis.
• 1998 — Hyundai acquires a controlling stake at auction, outbidding Ford, and the two enter the same group.
• 2002 — Kia Motors (UK) Limited incorporated.
• 2021 — the company renames itself Kia Corporation, dropping “Motors”; the UK company follows.

The 1998 rescue is the whole of the answer. Kia was not bought as a going concern by a rival; it was salvaged from insolvency by one, and the two have been bound together ever since. Hyundai has reduced its stake over the years without relinquishing control.

Ford, which had held a stake in Kia before the collapse and bid for it at auction, lost — which is why Kia is Korean-controlled rather than American-owned.

Related brands in the same group

The Hyundai Motor Group includes Hyundai, Kia and Genesis, the luxury marque covered separately on this site, along with Hyundai Mobis and the group’s other industrial businesses.

The connection most British buyers do not make is the one between Kia and Hyundai themselves. They are marketed as rivals, sold by different dealers, and are in the same group — which means a shopper cross-shopping a Sportage against a Tucson is comparing two products of one owner.

Kia is not connected to Toyota, Nissan, Mazda or Honda, all Japanese and separately owned. Nor to SsangYong, the other Korean marque, now owned by the KG Group.

The UK company number, the 2002 incorporation, the previous name and the active “no registrable person” statement are Companies House records for 04415807 and can be checked directly.

Two limits. The register establishes nothing about Kia’s ownership: an active statement is a statement about the company’s knowledge, not evidence that no owner exists — the position this site also records at Jaguar, Genesis, Hotel Chocolat and Rolex. And everything material sits under Korean disclosure, where a chaebol’s ultimate controller is harder to establish from filings than a UK PSC register would make it.

The register also holds a trap: BR MELLOW MOTORS LIMITED (16917484), a Wallington company, was previously named Kia Motors Limited, and a dissolved K.I.A. Motors Limited existed until 2010. Neither is the carmaker. Companies House does not verify most filed information.
