Who Owns McDonald's?

who owns the brand

McDonald’s is owned by McDonald’s Corporation, a US-listed company with no controlling shareholder. But the restaurant you visit is probably not owned by it: the great majority of McDonald’s outlets worldwide are run by franchisees — independent businesses licensing the brand. The UK chain also runs through a property partnership, which is a clue to how the company actually makes money. Ownership verified 6 September 2026.

Who owns the McDonald’s brand?

The brand and system belong to McDonald’s Corporation, listed on the New York Stock Exchange. It is widely held, with no parent above it and no shareholder near control — institutions hold most of the stock on behalf of funds and pension money.

The UK operating company is McDonald’s Restaurants Limited (01002769), incorporated 18 February 1971 and registered in East Finchley, London.

Parent company and ultimate owner

The UK chain runs through property rather than straight to the American parent, which is unusual and revealing:

  1. McDonald’s Restaurants Limited (01002769) — the UK operating company
  2. McDonald’s Real Estate LLP (OC303157) — holds 75%+ of shares and votes
  3. McDonald’s Real Estate Company No.1 Limited (04459056) — holds 75%+ of the LLP’s voting rights and surplus assets

The intermediate entities are property vehicles. That reflects how McDonald’s is built: it owns or leases the sites and licenses them to franchisees alongside the brand, so a large part of the business is real estate rather than food. The UK corporate structure puts that in plain sight.

Brand owner vs operating company

This is the distinction that matters most to anyone standing in a McDonald’s, and it is almost always missed.

McDonald’s Corporation owns the brand, the system and much of the property. Franchisees own the individual restaurants — they are separate businesses, employing their own staff, with their own accounts and their own owners. Around 90% of McDonald’s restaurants globally are franchised, and the UK has a large franchised estate alongside company-operated sites.

So “who owns McDonald’s” and “who owns my local McDonald’s” usually have different answers. The golden arches on a building are evidence of a licence, not of who owns that business. This is the same pattern as Costa Express machines and Premier convenience stores: a brand present under agreement, not ownership.

When the ownership changed

The restaurant was founded by Richard and Maurice McDonald in California in 1940. Ray Kroc joined as a franchise agent in 1954, built the corporation, and bought the brothers out in 1961 for $2.7 million.

McDonald’s Corporation floated in 1965 and has been publicly traded since — no acquisition, no take-private, no change of control in sixty years. The UK company dates from 1971, when the chain arrived in Britain.

The 1961 buyout also settled the brand: the brothers kept their original San Bernardino restaurant but lost the right to the name, which is why it traded afterwards under a different one.

Related brands in the same group

McDonald’s Corporation is focused on a single brand — unusual among large restaurant groups. It has previously held stakes in Chipotle and Pret a Manger and exited both, so those are no longer connected.

It should not be confused with the multi-brand operators it competes with: Yum! Brands owns KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell, and Restaurant Brands International owns Burger King. McDonald’s owns McDonald’s.

Sources and verification

The UK chain — operating company, property LLP and its corporate member — comes from the Companies House PSC register for 01002769 and OC303157, and can be walked by those numbers.

McDonald’s Corporation’s own ownership is not on any UK register; it is a US-listed company disclosing through SEC filings, where the proxy statement and Schedule 13G filings are authoritative. The franchising proportion is a reported company figure. Companies House does not verify most filed information.
