Who Owns Volvo?

Volvo Cars is owned by Geely, the Chinese group, and Companies House names its founder Li Shufu personally as the person with significant control of Volvo Car UK Limited — 75% or more of shares and voting rights. But “Volvo” covers two separate companies with different owners: Volvo Cars has been Geely-owned since 2010, while Volvo Group, which makes the trucks, is a different company entirely. Who owns the Volvo brand?

This is the rare case where the ownership question genuinely has two answers, and most confusion about Volvo comes from not knowing that.

Volvo Cars makes the cars and is owned by Zhejiang Geely Holding Group. Volvo Group (AB Volvo) makes trucks, buses and construction equipment, is listed in Stockholm, and is not owned by Geely. The two were one company until 1999 and have been separate ever since. They share the Volvo name through a jointly held trade mark arrangement rather than through common ownership.

The UK car company is Volvo Car UK Limited (02281044), incorporated 27 July 1988 and registered at Maidenhead.

Parent company and ultimate owner

Companies House records Li Shufu — Geely’s founder and chairman, registered country China — as the person with significant control of Volvo Car UK Limited, holding 75% or more of shares and voting rights with the right to appoint and remove directors.

His identity verification was completed on 18 May 2026 through an Authorised Corporate Service Provider, under the verification regime introduced by the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act.

That the register names an individual rather than a corporate chain is worth noting. For MG, the same kind of Chinese parent produces PSC entries naming rotating executives with no shareholding. Here the register goes straight to the person who controls the group.

Brand owner vs operating company

Volvo Car UK Limited imports and distributes in Britain. Volvo Cars, headquartered in Gothenburg, designs and builds. Geely Holding owns Volvo Cars. Li Shufu controls Geely.

Volvo Cars is itself listed on the Stockholm exchange following a 2021 flotation, with Geely retaining a controlling majority — so it has outside shareholders and is still firmly controlled.

The Swedish operation is not a shell. Volvo Cars kept its Gothenburg engineering and its own model development after the acquisition, which is why the cars remained recognisably Swedish under Chinese ownership.

When the ownership changed

Volvo was founded in Gothenburg in 1927. The car business was sold to Ford in 1999 — the point at which cars and trucks split into separate companies — and Ford sold Volvo Cars to Geely in 2010 for a reported $1.8 billion, during its post-crisis disposal of Jaguar, Land Rover, Aston Martin and Volvo.

Volvo Cars floated in Stockholm in 2021, and Geely remains the controlling shareholder.

Related brands in the same group

Geely’s automotive holdings are extensive: Polestar (spun out of Volvo Cars), Lotus, Proton, LEVC — the London Electric Vehicle Company, which builds the black cab — and a substantial stake in Mercedes-Benz Group. Geely also holds around 13% of Aston Martin.

Those Geely stakes are the group’s, not Volvo Cars’. Volvo and Lotus share an owner; they are not part of each other.

AB Volvo — trucks — is not in this group at all. It owns Renault Trucks, Mack and UD Trucks, and Geely holds a stake in it as an investor rather than as its parent.
