Who Owns Apple?

Apple has no owner. Apple Inc. is listed on NASDAQ with no controlling shareholder and no parent company. The largest holders are index managers — Vanguard and BlackRock, each in the region of 7–9% — holding on behalf of the pension and savings investors in their funds. Who owns Apple today?

Apple Inc. is a public company. Ownership sits with its shareholders and changes every trading day; no single party controls it and none is close to doing so.

Apple is worth contrasting with the other large US technology companies profiled on this site. Meta and Alphabet keep founder control through dual-class shares. Apple has a single class of common stock, so votes follow shares exactly — as at Amazon and Uber. Its founders’ holdings are long gone: Steve Jobs’ estate holdings were substantially in Disney stock after the Pixar sale, and Steve Wozniak sold most of his shares decades ago.

Ultimate parent and corporate structure

Apple Inc. is the ultimate parent, with no group above it. Beneath sit operating subsidiaries by market and function, including the UK entities that run retail and distribution here.

Those UK companies are operating subsidiaries controlled by the US parent. They employ UK staff and file UK accounts, and they own nothing of the group.

Major shareholders or controlling persons

Reported positions, which move continuously:

• The Vanguard Group — the largest holder, in the region of 8–9%
• BlackRock — the next largest, around 7%
• Berkshire Hathaway — the largest active (non-index) holder, though it has reduced its position substantially from its peak
• State Street and other index managers
• Insiders — collectively a fraction of a percent

Institutions hold the large majority. As elsewhere on this site, Vanguard and BlackRock lead the register because they run index funds holding nearly every large listed company; those shares belong to the funds’ investors, not to the managers.

Berkshire Hathaway is the meaningful exception, because it is an active investor that chose Apple deliberately rather than tracking an index. Even at its peak it was well below any level of control, and it has been selling down.

No holder approaches the 25% that would register as significant control under UK rules.

No UK register records Apple’s ownership. Apple Inc. is US-listed and discloses through SEC filings — the annual proxy statement (DEF 14A) for directors’ and officers’ holdings, and Schedule 13G filings for institutions crossing 5%.

Every percentage above is a snapshot from such a filing. Index positions drift with fund flows and Berkshire’s holding has changed materially over recent years, so any figure needs a date attached to mean anything.

Ownership history and changes

Apple was founded in 1976 by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne — Wayne selling his 10% stake within weeks for $800. It floated in 1980.

Jobs was forced out in 1985 and returned in 1997 when Apple acquired NeXT, becoming chief executive until 2011. He never regained a large shareholding; his influence came from the role rather than from ownership, which is the reverse of the founder-control pattern at Meta or Alphabet.

Apple has never been acquired and has had no change of control in over forty-five years as a public company.

Related companies and brands

Apple’s brands sit within the single company rather than in separately named subsidiaries — iPhone, Mac, iPad, Apple Watch, Apple TV+ and Apple Music are product lines, not businesses with their own owners.

Its acquisitions are absorbed rather than run separately: Beats, Shazam and NeXT among them. This makes Apple structurally simpler than Alphabet or Meta, where acquired companies such as YouTube, Instagram and WhatsApp still trade under their own names and are widely mistaken for independent businesses.
