Who Owns Maserati?

Maserati is owned by Stellantis — but Companies House does not say so. The UK register names two controllers of Maserati GB Limited: Maserati S.p.A. of Italy and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V., a company name superseded in January 2021 when FCA merged with PSA to form Stellantis. The Fiat entry on this site names Stellantis directly. Same group, same register, two different answers. Ownership verified 6 September 2026.

Who owns Maserati today?

The British company is MASERATI GB LIMITED (05647613), incorporated 7 December 2005. It has two active persons with significant control, both at 75% or more of shares and both notified 6 April 2016:

1. Maserati S.p.A. — Italy
2. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V. — Netherlands

Two controllers each holding 75%+ of the same company is not a contradiction. It means the company registered two levels of its ownership chain: Maserati S.p.A. holds the British company, and FCA held Maserati S.p.A., so each indirectly holds 75%+.

The ultimate owner is Stellantis N.V., the group formed when FCA merged with France’s PSA. Nothing sits above it.

Ultimate parent and corporate structure

Fiat’s UK company registered three controllers — FCA Partecipazioni, FCA Italy and Stellantis N.V. — and so names the current ultimate parent. Maserati’s registered two, and stops at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V., a name that ceased to describe the group in January 2021.

Both entries are filed by the same corporate group about the same ownership. One is current; the other is more than five years out of date. Nobody is obliged to update a PSC entry when a parent renames itself, and this is what happens when they do not.

The practical lesson runs through the whole site: a PSC entry records what a company filed, not what is true today. The same lag appears at Channel 5, still controlled on paper by Viacom Camden Lock Limited, and at Cadbury, still recorded under the Kraft name years after Mondelez took over.

Major shareholders or controlling persons

No individual controls Maserati or Stellantis. Stellantis is listed in Milan, Paris and New York, and its anchor shareholders are reported as Exor (the Agnelli family) at around 15%, Peugeot Invest around 8% and Bpifrance, the French state bank, around 6%.

Those percentages understate their power. Stellantis uses a Dutch loyalty voting structure — shares held continuously for a qualifying period earn extra votes — which roughly doubles the anchors’ voting weight, taking the three together to near half the vote without near half the equity.

None of this is on Companies House, and none of the holders would qualify as a person with significant control under UK rules, which begin at 25%.

Official records and evidence

The company number, the 2005 incorporation and both PSC entries with their bands and dates are Companies House records for 05647613 and can be checked directly.

Two limits. The register’s top entry names a superseded company name, so it cannot be relied on to identify the current parent — Stellantis is established by its own market filings, not by any UK document. And both entries are dated 6 April 2016, the day the PSC regime began; that is a commencement date carried forward, not a transaction date, and it should never be read as the day anyone acquired anything.

Searching the register by name is also unproductive. Of eighteen matches for “Maserati”, most are dissolved and unrelated — Maserati Chauffeur Hire, Maserati Clothings, Maserati Concierge, Maserati London. The car company is 05647613. Companies House does not verify most filed information.

Ownership history and changes

Maserati was founded in Bologna in 1914 by the Maserati brothers, and has changed hands more often than almost any surviving marque.

• 1937 — the brothers sell to the Orsi family and move the company to Modena.
• 1968 — bought by Citroën of France.
• 1975 — Citroën, in difficulty, puts Maserati into liquidation; the Italian state steps in and it passes to Alejandro de Tomaso.
• 1993 — Fiat takes full control.
• 1997–2005 — Fiat places Maserati under Ferrari, then moves it back.
• 2021 — the FCA–PSA merger makes it part of Stellantis.

The Citroën period is the one worth knowing. A French company owned Maserati for seven years, and its collapse nearly ended the marque — and Citroën is now, half a century later, in the same group as Maserati again under Stellantis. The two brands have been reunited by a merger neither was party to.

The Ferrari interlude is the other misconception. Maserati was run under Ferrari from 1997 to 2005 and has not been since — Ferrari was itself spun off from Fiat Chrysler in 2015 and is a separate listed company. Ferrari does not own Maserati.

Maserati sits at the top of that range as its luxury marque — so a Maserati and a Vauxhall have the same ultimate owner, which is the fact British readers find least intuitive about the group.

Ferrari is not in the group, though Exor holds large stakes in both, so the Agnelli family sits behind each without the companies being connected. Maserati has no connection to Lamborghini (Volkswagen), Aston Martin or Bentley, all covered elsewhere on this site.
