Who Owns Royal Mail?

Royal Mail is owned by Daniel Křetínský, the Czech businessman, through his EP group. Companies House records the chain in full: Royal Mail’s parent, now named International Distribution Services Limited, has been controlled by EP Distribution Services Limited since 2 June 2025, and that company traces up to Křetínský personally. Royal Mail was privatised in 2013 and is no longer British-owned. Ownership verified 5 September 2026.

Who owns Royal Mail today?

The postal operator is Royal Mail Group Limited (04138203), incorporated 10 January 2001. Above it sits International Distribution Services Limited (08680755) — the company formerly named Royal Mail plc, incorporated in 2013 for the privatisation and renamed as the group diversified.

That renaming catches people out. A search for “Royal Mail plc” returns a company that still exists under a different name, and the change of name was not a change of ownership. The change of ownership came later.

The register also shows EP UK Investments Ltd (09255154) as a ceased controller of EP UK Midco, ended 8 May 2024 — the point at which Křetínský was recorded personally rather than through that vehicle.

Major shareholders or controlling persons

Křetínský is recorded at the top band: 75% or more of shares and voting rights. This is not a company with dispersed ownership or a contested control position — the register shows a single individual controlling the chain outright.

Royal Mail was a listed company until the takeover, so before June 2025 it had thousands of shareholders and no controlling party. That is no longer the position, and sources describing Royal Mail as publicly listed are out of date.

Every step above is on the Companies House PSC register and can be checked by company number. The dates matter here more than usual, because this ownership is recent: 8 May 2024 for Křetínský’s entry at EP UK Midco, and 2 June 2025 for the entry against Royal Mail’s parent.

Unusually for this site, the whole chain resolves within the UK register — Křetínský is recorded personally at a UK company, so there is no point at which the trail leaves for a foreign filing.

Ownership history and changes

Royal Mail was a state-owned institution for centuries, corporatised and then privatised in 2013, when the government floated it and the company now called International Distribution Services was created to hold it.

Křetínský built a stake over several years through EP Group before bidding for the whole company. The takeover attracted political attention given Royal Mail’s universal service obligation, and completed with undertakings attached. The PSC entry of 2 June 2025 is the point at which it took effect on the register.

Note the distinction the site keeps throughout: the universal service obligation is a regulatory duty on the operator, not a form of public ownership. Royal Mail is privately owned and separately regulated.

Related companies and brands

International Distribution Services also holds GLS, the international parcels business, which is why the parent was renamed away from “Royal Mail” in the first place — the group is not only the UK postal operator.

The Post Office is a different organisation and is not part of this group. It was separated from Royal Mail in 2012 and remains government-owned. Post offices sell Royal Mail services under contract, which is why the two are so often confused, but they have had different owners for over a decade.
