Who Owns SpaceX?

who owns a limited company

SpaceX is controlled by Elon Musk, who owns a minority of it. Following the largest flotation in history — $75bn raised on Nasdaq on 12 June 2026 at a valuation of about $1.77 trillion — Musk holds just over 40% of the equity and more than 82% of the votes, through super-voting shares. SpaceX has also registered as a “controlled company”, exempting it from Nasdaq’s independent-board requirement. Ownership verified 6 September 2026.

Who owns Spacex today?

Space Exploration Technologies Corp. is now a public company, listed on Nasdaq under SPCX. Its shares are owned by institutional and retail investors, by earlier venture backers, and — decisively — by its founder.

The flotation priced 555.6 million shares at $135, raising $75bn: the largest initial public offering ever completed anywhere. It valued SpaceX at around $1.77 trillion, placing it among the most valuable companies listed in the United States.

Buying SPCX shares buys economic exposure to SpaceX. It does not buy meaningful influence over it, and the company’s own filings say so.

Ultimate parent and corporate structure

There is no parent. SpaceX sits at the top of its own structure, with Starlink — the satellite internet business — inside it rather than beside it.

The share structure is the substance. SpaceX floated with dual-class shares: Class B shares carrying ten votes each against Class A’s single vote. Musk holds the Class B stock. The arithmetic produces the divergence in the lead: a minority of the equity, a supermajority of the votes.

Two further features compound it. Musk is simultaneously chairman, chief executive and chief technology officer, and appoints most of the board. And SpaceX has taken “controlled company” status under Nasdaq’s rules — an exemption available to companies where one holder controls a majority of the votes, which relieves it of the requirement that a majority of its directors be independent.

That combination is unusual even among founder-controlled listings. This site has documented nine other mechanisms — Alphabet’s and Roblox’s vote multipliers, Nike’s board-election classes, Comcast’s fixed constitutional third, French and Dutch loyalty voting at Kering and Stellantis, Korean cross-shareholdings at Samsung and Hyundai, Wizz Air’s nationality disenfranchisement, Paramount’s non-voting stock. SpaceX’s is the most complete: the votes, the board appointments and the independence exemption all point the same way.

Major shareholders or controlling persons

Elon Musk holds just over 40% of the equity and more than 82% of the voting power. He cannot be removed by shareholders.

Other significant holders reported around the flotation include Alphabet, Fidelity, Founders Fund, Sequoia Capital and Andreessen Horowitz, alongside sovereign wealth funds. Reporting also connects SpaceX to xAI, Musk’s artificial intelligence company, through a transaction earlier in 2026 that brought xAI’s investors — including Nvidia and Gulf sovereign funds — onto the register.

Every one of those holders, together, has less say in how SpaceX is run than the founder does alone. That is the point of the structure, and it was disclosed in the prospectus rather than discovered afterwards — investors bought it knowingly.

Musk separately controls Tesla and X, covered elsewhere on this site. Those are separate companies with separate shareholders, sharing an individual rather than a corporate parent.

Official records and evidence

SpaceX’s ownership is now, for the first time, properly documented — and that is itself the change. As a private company its valuation came from secondary share sales and its shareholdings from reporting. As a listed company it files with the SEC: the S-1 registration statement, the final prospectus and subsequent proxy statements set out the share classes, the voting arithmetic and the holdings.

Those filings are the authoritative source, and they supersede every pre-flotation estimate of who owned what.

Companies House holds nothing relevant. SpaceX is American, and its Starlink service reaches British customers through arrangements licensed by Ofcom — which regulates satellite spectrum and is a separate question from ownership.

One caution on figures: equity percentages reported around a flotation move with the exercise of options and the settlement of allocations, so any single number is a snapshot. The voting proportion is the more stable and more meaningful one.

Ownership history and changes

SpaceX was founded in 2002 by Elon Musk, using proceeds from the sale of PayPal, with the stated aim of reducing launch costs and eventually settling Mars.

  • 2008 — Falcon 1 reaches orbit at the fourth attempt, with the company close to running out of money.
  • 2015 onward — successive private funding rounds from venture firms, sovereign funds and Alphabet raise the valuation repeatedly without any public listing.
  • 2019 onward — Starlink is built out, becoming the group’s largest revenue source.
  • February 2026 — the reported transaction connecting SpaceX and xAI.
  • 12 June 2026 — flotation on Nasdaq, raising $75bn.

For twenty-four years SpaceX was among the most valuable private companies in the world, and its ownership was correspondingly opaque. The flotation converted that into public disclosure — while, through the share classes, changing who controls it hardly at all.

Related companies and brands

SpaceX owns Starlink and Starshield, its defence arm, and operates Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy and Starship.

Tesla, X, Neuralink and The Boring Company are not in a group with SpaceX. They are separate companies with separate shareholders. The connection is one man, and this site draws that distinction consistently: a shared founder is not a corporate parent.

SpaceX is not connected to Blue Origin (Jeff Bezos), Rocket Lab, Arianespace or the European Space Agency. In Britain, OneWeb — the satellite operator part-owned by the UK government after its 2020 rescue and since merged into Eutelsat — is Starlink’s nearest competitor and has an entirely separate ownership.
