Who Owns Twitter?
Twitter is owned by Elon Musk, and it is no longer called Twitter. Companies House records the rename and the takeover: the British company X INTERNET UK LIMITED was previously Twitter UK Ltd, and Musk personally replaced Twitter, Inc. as its controller on 8 November 2022. His entry shows the structure precisely — 25–50% of the shares but 75% or more of the votes. Ownership verified 6 September 2026.
Who owns Twitter today?
Elon Musk controls it, through a chain of American companies. The platform is now X, and Twitter as a company no longer exists.
The British company is X INTERNET UK LIMITED (07653064), incorporated 1 June 2011. Its previous names on the register are TWITTER UK LTD and, before that, TWITTER INFORMATION NETWORK LIMITED.
A small detail on the register makes the point about how slowly names propagate: the company’s registered address is still filed as “Twitter Uk Ltd, 1st Floor, 20 Air Street, London”. The company changed its name; the address line did not.
Ultimate parent and corporate structure
Above the UK company sit the American entities. Musk’s acquisition vehicle absorbed Twitter, Inc. into X Corp. in 2023, and in March 2025 X Corp. was merged with xAI, Musk’s artificial intelligence company, under a combined holding company.
That merger is the part most people miss. X is no longer a standalone social media business at all — it is part of an AI group, and the platform’s data is a training asset for the AI side. The commercial logic of X today is not the logic of Twitter in 2021.
The UK register stops at Musk himself and names none of these companies, so the American structure above him is not established by any British filing.
Major shareholders or controlling persons
Musk’s PSC entry is unusually informative, and worth reading carefully:
- Ownership of shares — more than 25% but not more than 50%
- Ownership of voting rights — 75% or more
- Right to appoint or remove the majority of directors
Shares and votes are recorded separately on the PSC register precisely because they diverge, and here the gap is wide. Musk holds under half the equity and at least three-quarters of the votes.
The equity gap is explained by the co-investors who funded the $44bn purchase alongside him — a group reported to include sovereign wealth funds, technology investors and financial backers, and later the xAI shareholders brought in by the 2025 merger. None of them appears on the UK register, because the register names the person who meets the control conditions, not everyone with money in the business.
So the accurate statement is that Musk controls X without owning most of it — a structure this site has documented in other forms at Alphabet, Nike and Comcast, arrived at here through an ordinary leveraged buyout rather than a special share class.
Official records and evidence
The company number, the 2011 incorporation, both previous names, the Twitter, Inc. cessation and Musk’s entry with all three conditions come from Companies House for 07653064 and can be checked directly.
The 8 November 2022 notification date sits days after the takeover completed in late October 2022 — PSC changes must be filed promptly, and the short lag is normal. Unlike the many 6 April 2016 entries elsewhere on this site, this is a real transaction date.
Everything above the UK company is American and outside the register. X Corp. and xAI are private, so there is no proxy statement and no shareholder list — the identities of Musk’s co-investors are known largely from reporting and from disclosures made at the time of the acquisition financing, not from any filing you can check.
The register’s other Twitter entries are all unrelated and nearly all dissolved, including Twitterlane Interiors Limited and a company once simply named Twitter, dissolved in 2012. Companies House does not verify most filed information.
Ownership history and changes
Twitter was founded in 2006 and floated on the New York Stock Exchange in 2013 as a widely held public company with no controlling shareholder.
- April 2022 — Musk builds a stake, is offered a board seat, declines it, and bids for the whole company.
- July–October 2022 — he attempts to withdraw; Twitter sues; the Delaware court case forces completion.
- 27 October 2022 — the $44bn acquisition completes.
- 8 November 2022 — the UK register records Twitter, Inc. ceasing and Musk being notified.
- 2023 — the platform is rebranded X; Twitter, Inc. is merged into X Corp.
- March 2025 — X Corp. and xAI combine.
The 2022 purchase is among the few large takeovers completed by a buyer who had publicly tried to abandon it, and the price is generally regarded as far above what the business was worth. That matters for ownership: the debt raised against the company to fund it has shaped every decision since.
Related companies and brands
Musk separately controls Tesla, SpaceX, Starlink, Neuralink and The Boring Company. These are not in a group with X: they are separate companies with separate shareholders, sharing an individual rather than a corporate parent.
xAI is the exception — since March 2025 it and X are under one holding company, so Grok and X are genuinely related in a way Tesla and X are not.
X is not connected to Meta (Facebook, Instagram, Threads), Bluesky, Mastodon or Snap, all separately owned. In Britain the platform’s obligations under the Online Safety Act fall to Ofcom, which is a separate question from who owns it.
