Who Owns Chelsea?

Chelsea is owned by the consortium led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital that bought the club in 2022. Companies House records the handover precisely: Fordstam Limited — Roman Abramovich’s vehicle — ceased as the club’s registered controller on 30 May 2022, and a chain of newly incorporated “Blueco” companies took over. The register shows four layers between the club and the top. Ownership verified 6 September 2026.

Who owns Chelsea?

The club sits under Chelsea FC Holdings Limited (02536231), incorporated 3 September 1990 and formerly named Chelsea FC plc and before that Chelsea Village plc — the names tracking the club’s earlier flotation and later return to private hands.

Its registered controller is Blueco 22 Midco Limited, and the chain continues above that.

Four companies, all registered at Stamford Bridge, all incorporated or brought into the structure within months of each other in 2022. That is what an acquisition vehicle looks like on the register: layers created to hold, finance and ring-fence the purchase.

Key controlling people and entities

Two individuals appear briefly on the register and then disappear, which is easy to misread.

Todd Boehly was recorded as a person with significant control of Blueco 22 Limited at 75%+ from 27 April 2022 to 29 April 2022 — two days. Jonathan Goldstein held the same position from 2 March to 27 April 2022. Both were replaced by 22 Holdco Limited.

Those short entries are formation artefacts: an individual holds the initial share while a structure is assembled, then transfers it to the corporate vehicle. Reading Boehly’s two-day entry as a period of sole ownership would be wrong, and the same pattern appears on Monzo’s record elsewhere on this site.

Boehly is the public face and was co-controlling owner at the acquisition; Clearlake Capital, the US private equity firm, is the larger financial partner in the consortium. Neither appears on the UK register at the top of the chain — 22 Holdco Limited does, and the register stops there.

Ownership history

Roman Abramovich bought Chelsea in 2003 through Fordstam Limited (4784127), which is recorded as the club’s person with significant control from 6 April 2016 until 30 May 2022.

That date is the sale, forced by the UK sanctions imposed on Abramovich following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The club was sold under licence from the government, with proceeds frozen and earmarked for humanitarian purposes — an ownership change driven by sanctions rather than by a willing seller, and one of very few of its kind on the UK register.

Related clubs or investment group

The consortium’s interests extend beyond Chelsea. Boehly holds stakes in the Los Angeles Dodgers, Lakers and Sparks; Clearlake Capital has a broad private equity portfolio. Chelsea has also been associated with a multi-club approach through investment in clubs including Strasbourg.

Multi-club ownership is regulated: competition rules restrict clubs under common control from meeting in the same European tournament, which has practical consequences when two clubs in one group qualify.

The limit is where the register stops. It names 22 Holdco Limited and does not name the individuals or funds behind it, so the split between Boehly’s interests and Clearlake — widely reported, with Clearlake the larger holder — is not established by any UK filing. Companies House does not verify most filed information.
