Who Owns Liverpool?
Liverpool is owned by Fenway Sports Group, the Boston company led by John W. Henry — and a consortium including Jeff Bezos agreed in August 2026 to buy around 30% of the club. Companies House names only one person: Mr John Henry, American, holding 25–50% of the club’s holding company. Fenway Sports Group itself appears nowhere on the UK register, and neither does the new consortium. Ownership verified 6 September 2026.
Who owns Liverpool?
The club is THE LIVERPOOL FOOTBALL CLUB AND ATHLETIC GROUNDS LIMITED (00035668), incorporated 26 January 1892 and registered at Anfield Road — one of the oldest company numbers you will find attached to a going concern.
Its sole person with significant control is UKSV Holdings Company Ltd. (07393872), recorded with ownership of 75% or more of the shares since 6 April 2016.
One detail of that entry is worth reading precisely: it records share ownership only. Unlike most PSC entries in this position, it does not record voting rights or the right to appoint or remove directors — the register captures what was notified, and only the shareholding was.
Current owners and shareholding structure
The chain on the UK register is two steps long and then stops at a person:
- The Liverpool Football Club and Athletic Grounds Limited (00035668)
- UKSV Holdings Company Ltd. (07393872) — 75%+ of shares, since 6 April 2016
- Mr John Henry — American, born September 1949, ownership of more than 25% but not more than 50% of shares and voting rights
That is the whole of it. Fenway Sports Group is not named anywhere on Liverpool’s UK filings, and no other individual appears. Henry’s own band — a quarter to a half — is not control on its own, and yet he is the only human being the register attaches to the club.
The reason is that FSG is an American company whose own ownership is disclosed in the United States, not here. What the UK register can capture is the single individual whose holding in the intermediate company crosses the 25% threshold. Everything else in the structure sits above the reach of Companies House.
Key controlling people and entities
John W. Henry founded Fenway Sports Group and is its principal owner; Tom Werner is chairman and Mike Gordon has led FSG’s football involvement. FSG retains majority ownership and operational control of Liverpool.
Two outside investments preceded the current one, neither of them visible on the club’s register. RedBird Capital bought roughly 11% of Fenway Sports Group in 2021 — a stake in the parent, not in the club. Dynasty Equity invested in Liverpool itself in 2023 for a reported minority stake of a few per cent.
Then, on 14 August 2026, FSG agreed to sell about 30% of the club to 1892 Holdings, a consortium led and managed by Amit Bhatia and the Mittal family trusts, with Jeff Bezos, the Saverin family office and other investors participating, at a valuation reported at just over $7bn. Completion is subject to regulatory approval, and none of it has reached the register.
Ownership history
Liverpool was bought in 2007 by the American businessmen Tom Hicks and George Gillett in a debt-financed takeover that ended in crisis, with the club close to administration and its owners fighting the sale in court.
New England Sports Ventures — renamed Fenway Sports Group in 2011 — completed the purchase in October 2010 for a reported £300m. The register records the preparation: UKSV Holdings Company Ltd. was incorporated on 1 October 2010, two weeks before the takeover completed. Acquisition vehicles are almost always incorporated shortly before the deal they exist to carry out, and the date is often the most reliable timestamp available.
The club also stopped being a public company in that period: its previous name on the register is Liverpool Football Club and Athletic Grounds Public Limited Company (The), held until 21 June 2007 — the re-registration from plc to private company that followed the Hicks and Gillett purchase.
Related clubs or investment group
Fenway Sports Group owns the Boston Red Sox, the Pittsburgh Penguins, a NASCAR team and a share of the Fenway Sports Management business, alongside Liverpool. Common ownership across sports is not restricted; common ownership across football clubs is, because competition rules limit clubs under the same control from meeting in the same European tournament.
FSG has been linked with a multi-club model but Liverpool has remained its only football club of substance, which keeps it clear of those restrictions.
Sources and verification
The club’s company number and incorporation date, the UKSV Holdings entry and its 1 October 2010 incorporation, John Henry’s PSC record and the 2007 re-registration are all from the Companies House register.
Everything else on this page is reported rather than register-verified: FSG’s ownership of the club, the RedBird and Dynasty stakes, and the August 2026 agreement with the Bezos-backed consortium, all disclosed through announcements and US filings. The 30% sale is agreed and not completed, so the position stated here may change on approval. Companies House does not verify most filed information.
