Who Owns Tottenham Hotspur?

Tottenham Hotspur is controlled by trustees of a Bahamas trust associated with the Lewis family. Companies House does not name a beneficial owner: the registered controllers of Tottenham Hotspur Limited are two individuals recorded as having control over the trustees of a trust, each in the 50–75% band. Joe Lewis ceased to be a registered controller on 5 October 2022. Ownership verified 6 September 2026.

Who owns Tottenham Hotspur?

Three companies carry the name and they do different jobs. Tottenham Hotspur Football & Athletic Co. Ltd (00057186), incorporated 3 May 1898, is the historic club company. Tottenham Hotspur Football Club Holdings Limited (10443734) sits above it. Tottenham Hotspur Limited (01706358) is the company where ownership actually resolves — it is the registered controller of the holdings company, notified 25 October 2016.

Current owners and shareholding structure

Tottenham Hotspur Limited has two active persons with significant control, and neither is described as an owner:

• Peter Clive Charrington — 50–75% of shares and voting rights with control over the trustees of a trust, Bahamas, notified 27 August 2024
• Katie Louise Booth — the same nature of control, Bahamas, notified 5 October 2022

The phrase doing the work is “with control over the trustees of a trust”. These are people exercising control in a trustee capacity, not people who own the club in their own right. The register tells you who can exercise control and deliberately does not tell you who benefits from it.

The commercial vehicle usually named in coverage is ENIC, the investment company through which the Lewis family interests have held Tottenham since 2001. ENIC’s own stake in the club is reported at around 85%, with the remainder held by minority shareholders below the PSC threshold.

Key controlling people and entities

Two names that dominate reporting do not appear as controllers, and that is worth stating.

Joe Lewis was the registered PSC from 6 April 2016 until 5 October 2022. Since then the register has named trustees instead — the family interests having been placed in trust. He is no longer a registered controller of the club.

Daniel Levy was chairman for over two decades and is the person most associated with running Spurs. He has never been a person with significant control at this level. Chairing a club and controlling it are different things, and Tottenham is the clearest example of the gap on this site.

A further ceased entry, Bryan Antoine Glinton, ran from 5 October 2022 to 27 August 2024, when Charrington replaced him — trustees changing, control structure unchanged.

Ownership history

Tottenham was a listed company on the London Stock Exchange from 1983 — the 1983 incorporation of Tottenham Hotspur Limited belongs to that era — before ENIC built its stake from 2001 and took the club private in 2012.

The register’s own turning point is 5 October 2022, when Lewis ceased and trustee control was recorded. The transfer of family assets into trust reorganised who is registered without changing which family the interests belong to.

Related clubs or investment group

ENIC previously held stakes in several European clubs, including Rangers, Slavia Prague, Vicenza and AEK Athens. Those were divested after UEFA rules restricting common ownership of clubs in the same competition — an early instance of the multi-club problem that has become common since.

Tottenham today is not part of an active multi-club group.

The limit here is real and worth stating plainly: the register identifies trustees, not beneficial owners. Who ultimately benefits from the trust is not a matter of UK public record, and no amount of Companies House searching will produce it. The ENIC shareholding percentage is a reported figure rather than a register entry, since it sits above the band the register uses. Companies House does not verify most filed information.
