Who Owns HBO?

HBO is owned by Warner Bros. Discovery — but that is changing. Paramount Skydance agreed an all-cash takeover of the whole company at $31 a share, roughly $110bn; Warner shareholders approved it in April 2026 and the US Department of Justice cleared it in June 2026, with further regulatory reviews outstanding. I could not establish that the deal had completed as at this verification date. Netflix bid and withdrew. Ownership verified 6 September 2026.

Who owns Hbo?

Home Box Office is a division of Warner Bros. Discovery, the American group listed on NASDAQ. HBO is not a company anyone can buy shares in directly.

Its British entities are registered in Chiswick, London: HBO INTERNATIONAL (EUROPE) LIMITED (06207813, incorporated 10 April 2007), HBO EUROPE ORIGINAL PROGRAMMING LIMITED (08777475) and HBO FILM & TELEVISION DEVELOPMENT LIMITED (06880598).

Searching Companies House for “HBO” is a minefield. Of 213 matches, the great majority are unrelated — HBO Construction, HBO Consulting, HBO Engineering, HBO Express — and the largest is HBOS PLC (SC218813), Halifax Bank of Scotland, a failed British bank now inside Lloyds. Nothing but the company number distinguishes a television business from a bank.

Parent company and ownership structure

Warner Bros. Discovery was itself formed in 2022, when AT&T spun off WarnerMedia and merged it with Discovery. HBO sits inside it alongside the Warner Bros. studio and the HBO Max streaming service.

The company spent 2025 and 2026 being taken apart and fought over simultaneously. It announced a plan to separate its declining cable networks from the studio and streaming businesses, and while that was under way it received unsolicited offers.

  • December 2025Netflix agrees to buy the studio and streaming divisions in a cash-and-stock deal reported at about $72bn.
  • February 2026Paramount Skydance bids $31 a share in cash for the entire company. On 26 February Netflix declines to match and withdraws.
  • April 2026 — Warner shareholders approve the Paramount offer.
  • June 2026 — the US Department of Justice clears the acquisition.

Reporting at that point had the FCC review outstanding, along with state attorneys general and regulators in the European Union and the United Kingdom. This page does not assert that the transaction has closed. Warner Bros. Discovery remains HBO’s owner on the evidence available; whether Paramount Skydance has become so by the time you read this is a question for the companies’ own filings.

Major shareholders or controlling interests

Warner Bros. Discovery has no controlling shareholder. Its stock is widely held, with the largest positions sitting with index managers on behalf of their funds’ investors.

Paramount Skydance is a different proposition. It is controlled by the Ellison family interests following the Skydance transaction, and reporting on the Warner bid noted substantial outside capital in the financing, including from a Saudi sovereign fund. A widely held company would be acquired by a family-controlled one.

None of this appears on Companies House. The UK entities are subsidiaries of a foreign parent, and the register would not name the ultimate owner even if the position were settled.

Other media assets in the group

Warner Bros. Discovery owns HBO, HBO Max, Warner Bros. Pictures, DC, Cartoon Network, CNN, Discovery, Eurosport and TNT Sports.

Two British connections are worth stating. TNT Sports is a joint venture in the UK with Sky, which holds a substantial interest — so the group already sits alongside Comcast in a British sports broadcaster. And in Britain HBO’s programmes have long reached viewers through Sky Atlantic under a distribution agreement, not through a channel HBO owns. A viewer watching an HBO drama in Britain is usually a Sky customer.

The consequence of the Paramount deal, if it completes, is the one most people miss: Paramount Skydance already owns Channel 5, covered elsewhere on this site. HBO and Channel 5 would share an owner — and HBO Max and Paramount+ have been announced as combining into a single streaming service.

Ownership history

HBO was launched in 1972 as the first American subscription cable channel, and it has never been independent for long.

  • 1973 — acquired by Time Inc.
  • 1990 — Time merges with Warner Communications to form Time Warner.
  • 2001 — the AOL merger, generally regarded as among the most value-destructive in corporate history.
  • 2018AT&T acquires Time Warner after a contested antitrust case.
  • 2022 — AT&T spins the business off; it merges with Discovery to form Warner Bros. Discovery.
  • 2026 — the Paramount Skydance acquisition, agreed and part-cleared.

Five changes of ownership in twenty-five years, each one a larger transaction than the last, and none of them chosen by HBO.

Sources and verification

The UK company numbers and incorporation dates are Companies House records and can be checked directly. They establish that HBO has British subsidiaries and nothing at all about who owns them.

Everything material here rests on US disclosure — SEC filings, the companies’ announcements and the DOJ’s clearance — and on press reporting of a transaction that was still moving through regulators. The ownership position on this page is therefore less settled than on any other profile on this site, and the honest statement is that HBO’s owner today is Warner Bros. Discovery, with an approved buyer waiting on regulatory clearance. Companies House does not verify most filed information.
