Who Owns Matchroom?
Matchroom is owned by the Hearn family. Companies House records Matchroom Sport Limited (01630824, incorporated 23 April 1982) as controlled by Matchroom Holdings Ltd since 22 February 2021 — the date Barry Hearn‘s personal entry ceased, when he restructured the business he founded and handed day-to-day control to his son Eddie Hearn. It has never taken outside investment. Ownership verified 6 September 2026.
Who owns Matchroom?
The operating company is MATCHROOM SPORT LIMITED (01630824), incorporated 23 April 1982 and registered in Brentwood, Essex — where the business has always been.
Its person with significant control is MATCHROOM HOLDINGS LTD (13198882, incorporated 12 February 2021), at 75% or more of shares, notified 22 February 2021.
The ceased entry names the founder: Mr Barry Maurice William Hearn, more than 50% but less than 75% of shares, from 6 April 2016 until 22 February 2021.
Ten days separate the holding company’s incorporation from its notification. That is the signature of a planned internal reorganisation, not a sale — and applying this site’s standing rule, a cessation is not an exit. Barry Hearn did not sell Matchroom; he put a holding company above it.
Ownership and control structure
Matchroom is private, family-controlled and has no outside shareholder — no fund, no broadcaster, no sovereign wealth investor. Among the sports businesses covered on this site that is now unusual: WWE belongs to TKO and ultimately to a private equity-backed group, Formula One to Liberty Media, the UFC to the same owner as WWE.
The group is organised as a set of companies by sport and by territory, all at the Brentwood address:
- Matchroom Sport Limited (1982) — the original company
- Matchroom Boxing Limited (2016), Matchroom Boxing USA Limited (2018) and Matchroom Boxing Global LLP (2018)
- Matchroom Multi Sport Limited (2020) and Matchroom Media Ltd (2021)
The American company matters commercially. Matchroom’s expansion into US boxing was built on a broadcasting deal — first with DAZN, covered elsewhere on this site — and the separate entity is how a British promoter operates in the United States without moving the business there.
Key investors or controlling entities
There are none beyond the family. Barry Hearn founded the business, built it through snooker in the 1980s and darts in the 2000s, and remains its owner. Eddie Hearn runs the boxing operation and chairs the group.
Barry Hearn’s other roles are frequently mistaken for ownership. He is president of the World Snooker Tour and was chairman of the Professional Darts Corporation — but Matchroom’s relationship to those bodies is promotional and commercial, not proprietary. Matchroom promotes events and holds rights; it does not own the sports’ governing structures.
That distinction runs through the whole business. Matchroom owns events and rights — a fight, a tournament, a broadcast package — rather than clubs, teams or leagues. It is a promoter, and a promoter’s assets are contracts.
How the organisation is structured
Matchroom promotes boxing, snooker, darts, pool, fishing and a range of invented formats, and produces the broadcast coverage itself through Matchroom Media.
Owning the production as well as the promotion is the commercially distinctive part: Matchroom sells finished programming to broadcasters rather than selling access and letting someone else make it. That is why a company of its size holds so many hours of televised sport.
The register shows recent activity worth noting without over-reading. Three companies — Matchroom Ltd, Matchroom Snooker Ltd and Matchroom Cues Ltd — were incorporated on 11 March 2026, registered not in Brentwood but in Bolton. New incorporations are not evidence of a transaction, and this page draws no conclusion from them beyond the fact of their existence.
Ownership history
Barry Hearn began by buying a chain of snooker halls and managing Steve Davis, then built a promotion business around televised snooker in the 1980s.
- 1982 — Matchroom Sport Limited incorporated on 23 April.
- 1980s — snooker’s television boom; the “Matchroom Mob”.
- 1990s–2000s — expansion into boxing, darts and pool.
- 2016–2018 — the boxing companies are formed as the business expands into the United States.
- 22 February 2021 — Matchroom Holdings Ltd replaces Barry Hearn as registered controller; Eddie Hearn becomes group chairman.
Forty-four years, one family, no sale and no outside capital. That places Matchroom with JCB, bet365 and Alo among the genuine outliers documented on this site — businesses of real scale that have only ever had one owner.
Sources and verification
Every company number, incorporation date, PSC entry, band and date above comes from Companies House and can be checked directly. The 2021 restructuring is register-verified, including the ten-day gap between incorporation and notification.
Two limits. The register names Matchroom Holdings Ltd as controller and does not disclose how that company’s shares are divided within the family — so the precise split between Barry and Eddie Hearn is not established by any filing. And the register records a band, never a percentage: Barry Hearn’s pre-2021 holding was somewhere between half and three-quarters, and nothing narrows it further.
Matchroom’s commercial relationships with governing bodies and broadcasters are contractual and not on any public register. Companies House does not verify most filed information.
